15 Mar CHOOSE LIFE
I was reading a newspaper article over the weekend about the funeral of George Michael. The article also talked about all the famous people and celebrities that, along with George, were lost to the world in 2016 – Muhammed Ali, David Bowie, Prince, Terry Wogan, Carrie Fisher, Johan Cruyff, Victoria Wood, Leonard Cohen, Alan Rickman to name but a few.
What struck me about all of these people, no matter how sad and surprising their deaths were, is that they all lived a heck of a life. In doing so, many of them had to breakthrough various limiting beliefs, obstacles and habits: Victoria Wood suffered from depression and overeating; Muhammed Ali had dyslexia; Alan Rickman overcame low self-confidence and self-esteem; George, Bowie and Prince had their own well-documented neuroses and addictions.
However, they will all be universally remembered for their outstanding achievements and the joy that their talent brought to others. In their own way, they made a difference.
These people all lived and died in the public domain of course, but no matter what distance you desire your own personal ‘fame’ to travel, where are you on the road to living a heck of a life, to making a difference to yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and community? If you were to write your own obituary now, would it be tinged with regret at the things you haven’t done? Please don’t wake up just before you go go!
The newspaper article was ironically illustrated by a picture of George in his 1980s prime, wearing his iconic ‘CHOOSE LIFE’ T-shirt, which was designed by British fashion designer Katharine Hamnett. She said the slogan was inspired by a Buddhist exhibition she had visited and was a comment against war, death and destruction.
Buddha also said:
“To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent”
My message in this blog is heartfelt and simple. You only get one chance at life. Once you’re gone, you’ll never get it back. The good news is that you have the choice to make the difference, every minute of every hour of every day. You are in your life’s driving seat – don’t let others drive your car!
There are those of us that can be settle for being idle, to choose the path of least resistance in order to achieve an easy, if slightly downtrodden life. Or there are those of us that can take a more diligent path towards choosing the outcomes, purposes and actions that we desire and that will serve us best for our time on this planet.
When you wake up every day, CHOOSE LIFE. Choose the attitude that will serve you best!
I would love the opportunity to support you in becoming the architect and builder of the most fulfilled and happiest life you could wish for.
